Users of the Dutch crypto exchange Bitvavo experienced temporary issues accessing their accounts this morning. The cause was not an internal problem but a widespread outage at an external internet provider that has since been resolved.
In Short #
- Bitvavo and various other crypto services were temporarily unreachable on the morning of December 5.
- The cause was an outage at internet infrastructure company Cloudflare, not at the crypto platforms themselves.
- The Cloudflare outage was resolved within sixteen minutes, and all services are now fully operational.
Cause Traced to Internet Giant Cloudflare #
The outage occurred at Cloudflare, an American company that manages a crucial part of the internet’s digital infrastructure. Cloudflare acts as a sort of traffic controller for data traffic. A problem there can cause a digital ’traffic jam,’ making websites and apps unreachable.
Bitvavo was far from the only affected party. According to Cloudflare’s official status page and well-known blockchain analyst Wu Blockchain, major international exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken, as well as services like the OKX wallet, Jupiter, Raydium, and Meteora, were also impacted.
Outage Resolved in Sixteen Minutes #
Cloudflare identified the problem at 09:56 Dutch time. According to the company’s status page, a solution was implemented by 10:12, just sixteen minutes later. Shortly after, the affected services, including Bitvavo, were fully back online and accessible to all users.
Bitvavo’s status page, however, still indicates that users may experience potential issues.
This is not the first time this has happened. An outage at Cloudflare also took crypto platforms offline at the end of November.
