Toll roads are a rarity in the Netherlands, often seen as a relic of the past. However, they’ve made a comeback on the A24 between Vlaardingen and Rozenburg. Despite being presented as a modern and efficient system, many feel it’s an unnecessary hurdle that disproportionately penalizes less digitally-savvy drivers with hefty fines.
The Toll Road #
The A24 between Vlaardingen and Rozenburg opened on December 7, 2024. The road was built to improve traffic flow in the Rotterdam region. Politicians decided that the new road should be paid for by its users through tolls. The cost is reasonable at €1.51 per trip, which is roughly equivalent to the fuel cost of taking a detour.
Payment Options #
On the website of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, drivers can choose their preferred payment method. The simplest and most convenient option is automatic payment, where the toll is debited directly from your bank account, ensuring you never forget to pay.
You can also pay manually. If you do so within 72 hours, the standard rate of €1.51 applies.
If you fail to pay within 72 hours, you will receive a reminder by post. This will cost you an additional €9 in administrative fees, according to the ministry. Ignoring this payment reminder will result in a €35 fine.
To facilitate payments, the government has appointed several payment providers through which drivers can settle their toll. For the A24, these are Flitsmeister, 24Toll, and MOVE-IZI. Users can register with these companies for automatic toll payments. Currently, 80% of toll trips are paid automatically, including those by the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Barry Madlener.
“It was arranged in a few clicks. It saves time, hassle, and potentially a fine,” the minister said.
Starting December 7, 2025, users must pay within 72 hours to avoid the €9 reminder.
Warning Signs #
At the Blankenburg exit, traffic signs on both sides of the A24 indicate that it is an e-toll road and that payment must be made within three days. The e-tol website is also mentioned on these signs.
When you drive on the toll road, a camera will take a picture of your vehicle and its license plate, allowing the authorities to identify that you have used the toll road.
