The end of the year is approaching, a time for many to review their financial situation: what came in, what went out, and what was left over? Many Dutch people use this period to set their savings goals, which immediately brings up a key question: how much in savings is actually ’normal'?

On average, the Dutch have a significant amount of money in their bank accounts. Recent research from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) shows that even the 18 to 25 age group has managed to save a considerable amount on average.

What Dutch People Aged 18 to 25 Have Saved
#

CBS researchers examined the age of the primary earner in a household, which can consist of a single person or an entire family. Savings fall under what the institution calls ‘bank and savings balances,’ which is the total amount of money an individual holds in accounts both domestically and internationally.

Dutch people aged 18 to 25 have an average of €10,800 in savings. However, the median is significantly lower at €3,400. This makes them the age group with the least amount of money in the bank on average. This is not surprising, considering that people in this age group are often still studying and have not yet entered the workforce.

The difference between the average and the median is important. The average is much higher due to a small group of wealthy Dutch citizens. The median is the middle amount, meaning half of Dutch households have more and the other half have less. In reality, the median can therefore provide a more realistic picture.

Which Age Group Has the Most Savings?

Overall, the average savings for all Dutch people is €52,700. One age group stands out in particular: those aged 65 to 75.

As we previously reported, according to the CBS, people in this age group have an average of €76,600 in their savings accounts. Here too, the median is lower, at €35,600.

Dutch people aged 75 to 85 follow with an average savings balance of €75,000. The median for this group is €34,800. From the age of 85, this amount begins to decline again.
