The crypto sector is no longer just about trading. Nowadays, there are all sorts of online games that utilize crypto networks.
This sector has become very popular in a short time, as these crypto games often offer rewards in digital currencies. It sounds too good to be true, but is it?
Classic Games on the Blockchain #
Solitaire is a classic single-player game that now has a crypto variant. For example, THNDR Games and Bling Financial have both launched their own versions where you can play traditional solitaire while earning small amounts of Bitcoin.
Another classic is Sudoku, which is also now available as a crypto variant. Bling Financial’s version offers rewards in both Bitcoin and Ethereum.
There is also a crypto game based on crossword puzzles. Word Breeze gives you points in the game that you can later exchange for Bitcoin or Ethereum. The app is linked to Coinbase, but winnings can also be cashed out via PayPal.
Crypto Variants of Popular Games #
One of the most popular mobile games right now is Candy Crush Saga. Sweet Bitcoin, developed by Bling Financial, is based on this game. Sweet Bitcoin is similar to the original but awards you points as you play, which can be exchanged for Ethereum or Bitcoin.
Another game from the same developer is Ethereum Blast, a space-themed puzzle game. It resembles existing popular games where you combine different blocks of the same color to remove them.
Is There a Catch? #
In a world where nothing is truly free, there is, of course, a business model behind these games. The crypto rewards are real, but it’s not as good as it sounds. First, the rewards are small, ultimately amounting to just a few cents per hour.
The games show video ads between playing sessions; the revenue from these ads is ultimately used to fund the crypto rewards. These ads are often unskippable and can sometimes last as long as, or even longer than, your playtime. Moreover, the games are often not as complex or challenging as existing non-crypto games.
