Netflix is working on a new comedy film that centers on a familiar problem in the crypto world: losing your password.
The film, titled ‘One Attempt Remaining,’ follows a divorced couple who discovers their forgotten cryptocurrency is now worth millions, but they no longer have access to their wallet.
Race Against Time #
According to Netflix, the film follows two ex-partners who won cryptocurrency during a cruise. At the time, the prize was worth little, but over time, its value has grown to more than 30 million euros. The problem is that neither knows how to access the cryptocurrency.
To make matters worse, they receive a message from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stating they have only forty-eight hours to access the wallet.
With this film, Netflix is clearly taking a lighthearted approach to a topic that in practice is often anything but funny. Forgetting a private key or password in crypto almost always means the cryptocurrency is permanently inaccessible.
Crypto Stories as Inspiration #
The title One Attempt Remaining refers to a common problem with hardware wallets, where a limited number of attempts are allowed.
The film appears inspired by the story of Stefan Thomas, a former Ripple executive. He lost access to a hard drive containing more than 7,000 bitcoin.
The secure hard drive wiped itself after ten failed attempts. Thomas indicated he had already used eight attempts.
Another well-known example is that of British entrepreneur James Howells. As previously reported in Bitcoin news, he threw away a hard drive containing private keys to 8,000 bitcoin.
The drive reportedly ended up in a landfill. Despite years of legal proceedings, he has so far not received permission to search there. At current prices, this represents a value of approximately 630 million euros.
Rarely in the Spotlight #
Although crypto has regularly appeared in series and documentaries for years, it is rarely the central theme of a feature film.
Exceptions include Money Plane and the documentary Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King. With One Attempt Remaining, Netflix opts for a different approach: humor around a painfully realistic problem.
Anyone who manages their own crypto also bears full responsibility. One forgotten password can mean the difference between being a millionaire or ending up with empty hands.
